Background I used to walk around with two electronic lumps in my pocket - a basic mobile phone and a Palm Tungsten T2 PDA. This was OK, except my pockets tend to have holes in them and occasionally my phone would fall out and skid across the pavement. Since I don't like sewing or buying trousers, the solution was simple - replace the phone/ PDA with a single do-everything PDA. In addition, I got caught in a thunderstorm and my Palm got soaking wet and refused to sync with my PC. I wanted one machine to replace my phone/ PDA functionality: Phone: PDA: Manage appointments with alarms, repeat events etc Manage contacts Alarm clock Quickly note things down (text or drawing) Simple countdown timer ( I used the free diddlebug on my Palm) - mainly used for cooking Audio tuner - ideally phontuner which I bought for my Palm (useful for tuning and practicing cello) Metronome ( I used a free one on my Palm) Voice recorder with good enough quality to record tunes to learn, or to record myself and play along without the quality being painful. Play mp3 - mainly accompaniments etc for me to play along with on cello. Language dictionary - I need German English Image display - I stored many images of insects/birds etc on my Palm to help with identification The ability to write my own programs if I want, or can't find something suitable In addition I was quite tempted by a device with the following: GPS navigation Wireless access to: Internet/web browsing Direct POP3/ SMTP email camera (though not too fussed by this) I never got on well with Palm's Graffiti 2 (version 1 was OK!) - even after years of use. So - I thought a little keyboard might be better, as well as a touch-sensitive screen. What I got. So - I got a HP IPAQ hw6915 Mobile Messenger, running Windows Mobile 5.0. I ticks the boxes for just about everything I wanted (or so I thought). I also got the Tom Tom Western Europe maps.
