We were all fairly certain Princess Kaguya was gonna walk away with the Oscar this time. Did you see the competition? Such average movies. No big unstoppable phenomena like Frozen were present to take it away. And Princess Kaguya was great! That Oscar is yours, Takahata! Ech, no. It just went to Big Hero 6, a pretty okay formulaic Disney movie. Oh well.

Watch This: Kaguya-hime no Monogatari ( The Tale of Princess Kaguya) Type: Film Year: 2013 Director: Isao Takahata MAL Trailer INTRO It goes without saying that the animated films produced by Studio Ghibli have achieved international recognition for their rich stories and visual quality in this day and age. There is a certain universality that this studio possesses in terms of filmmaking in regards to the way they constantly manage to create compelling characters and magical worlds with each of their works. Over the years, Hayao Miyazaki had solidified himself as the visionary director that would characterize most of Studio Ghibli's film production and directorial style. And yet, it must be said that Miyazaki was motivated by and heavily influenced by many other directors, one of the most notable being his fellow Studio Ghibli co-founder: Isao Takahata. In 1960, after graduating form the University of Tokyo and witnessing the wonders of animation, Takahata joined Toei Animation with several other animators that would go on to change the industry forever. He would grow close to his good friend Miyazaki after both being instructed by Yasuo Ōtsuka and taking part in various projects throughout the 1970s. In 1985, Takahata joined Miyazaki's newly founded studio and together they worked on Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Castle in the Sky. These films would stand as monuments of the combined vision of the founders and arguably changed the way Miyazaki approached direction. Soon, Takahata began to direct his own films with Ghibli, including the legendary Grave of the Fireflies, Pom Poko, Only Yesterday and finally, his last film for what would be a while, My Neighbors the Yamadas. In 2005, Takahata was approached with a project that had began under Tomu Uchida with Toei Animation back in the 1960s: an adaptation of the traditional Japanese fairy tale, The Tale of the.
I am a huge fan of anything Studio Ghibli. I saw The Tale of Princess Kaguya, their most recent film, last Friday. I am curious if anyone else here has seen the film, and what they thought about it. I am convinced it is one of Studio Ghibli's best films ever produced, and it is one of my favorite films in general. Also, I don't take much time to give proper exposition to most of what is written - so this will all only make sense if you have seen the film. The real reason I want to discuss the film however is that my friend and I have very different opinions. I think the film is a successful film based on what its intentions are (or seem to be). It is a retelling of a classic Japanese fable, The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, and the entire movie has a very mythic quality too it. The characters and situations are archetypal due to the economy of storytelling in myths. Despite having characters that might not be as rich as a conventional narrative, the film makes up for this with its incredible attention to detail making everything the characters do seem as human as possible ( Takahata does this in all of his animated films). This is done showing detailed animations of every day tasks, or animating very specific human behaviors (like a baby trying to imitate and hop like a frog). My friend thought this myth didn't translate very well to film. For him, he was always questioning the reactions Princess Kaguya has to her world. Just letting a childhood friend of hers get beat up, and not using her power as a princess to stop it. Her letting the other characters dictate what her life's purpose is. He felt she was, as a film character, a flat and unconvincing person. My rebuttals come back always to that the film is not a film about someone who makes the right decisions. A good character isn't always someone who makes the right choices. The film is, as the ending very clearly.
